Professor Nelsen is teaching Spanish in Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. She went to Spain to study Spanish without knowing many vocabulary words or conjugations. She acquired 80% of her Spanish in Spain. She told her own experience of learning Spanish and compared her way of acquiring language with the ways that she is teaching students now. She stated that it is best to do some basic learning in classroom and then travel to the country that the language is from to get the best results. She also mentioned that in classroom learning, students worry more about the grammar that is not as important (not relate to what they learn now) or they already know (same in native language) instead of trying to talking and let the teacher help them to get immersion experience.

Yi "Bridget" Pei, an international student and partner on our project, talks about her experiences learning the English language in a Chinese classroom, and her experiences being immersed in American culture. She discusses the effectiveness of having a background of classroom learning before becoming completely immersed in the language, and how it assisted her transition into an American university. Bridget is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, and learned English as her second language. She is currently attending Emory University of Atlanta, Georgia.
